New Year's Resolutions
Happy New Year Everyone
Today I want to talk about New Years resolutions and specifically why it is ok change your New Years Resolutions at any time without needing to have any feelings of guilt. At the start of the year lot's of us set ourselves goals or targets of something that we want to achieve over the next year and a lot of the time in my experience we find ourselves either not managing to achieve these goals or targets or getting fatigued with it and "giving up" but are we really giving up?
or are we setting ourselves up for failure?
As humans we have become wired to want instant gratification or to see a result quickly and if we don't see these results we very quickly tend to lose traction to move towards our goals or to give up all together. Therefore it is my belief that when setting ourselves New Years resolutions there are a few different ways that we can create our goals that will help us actually achieve them depending on how you prefer to work towards them.
The Monthly Goals Method
If you know that you thrive on meeting lots of small goals quickly, this method could be great for you. you can approach this method in a couple of ways, the monthly goals method means that instead of setting a goal that will take and entire year to achieve you can either take the entire one yearly goal and break it down into monthly activities to achieve that goal or you can take my preference which is to set yourself a new goal each month that is easy to achieve. My preference of 1 small monthly goal allows you to have the satisfaction of knowing that at the end of each month you have achieved what you set out too. This method will also help you create trust within yourself by keeping having evidence each month that you kept the promise that you made to yourself. This method will allow you to build trust with yourself and is a great starting point for those who want to build towards yearly goals as you create belief in yourself that you are capable of reaching your goals and sticking with them.
The Quarterly Goals Method
Setting yourself quarterly goals can be a great way to still keep your goals attainable and also give a good length of time if you know the goal you want to achieve will take longer than one month. On one hand this method I think is great to help you focus on a target that previously you may have given yourself and entire year to achieve and will help to push you to reach your goals faster but on the other will also help you if you are the type of person who get's bored focusing on just one goal and will keep your targets fresh throughout the year which will keep you more focused on actually achieving and wanting to achieve them.
The 1 - 12 Method
This method is for the person who has lots of goals that may take different lengths of time to achieve and is really easy to plan and is exactly what is says, you select one goal that will take one month to achieve, one that takes two months to achieve, one that will take three months to achieve and so on an so forth. This will allow you to have shorter goals that give you instant gratification but also long term goals that you want to achieve. Using this method I also really like as realistically if you have a big goal it may take you longer but it also incorporates goals that are smaller and shorter and if you achieve those it will spur you on to achieve your bigger ones.
I also want you all to remember that if you don't achieve your goals you have NOT failed. You can always start again and you can also change your goals at any time and this also does NOT make you a failure in reaching goals. This is actually just very realistic in life, sometimes we need to change, pivot, adjust and reassess what we are working towards based on what our life brings and what happens so please do not be too hard on yourself. You are in control of what you work towards and also in control of the timeframe. It is also imprortant to remember that reaching even one part of your goal let alone the entire this is better than doing nothing and trying and not achieving the entire goal is not failure it is a set in the right direction, just keep trying.
I hope hope this post and the methods have been helpful, I hope and believe that you can all reach and adjust your goals accordingly without guilt and I hope you all come back and visit again soon.
